UNIT 10: ANCIENT GREECE

Here we are, close to our own history... Step by step, but at last, , we have arrived to Greece. I am going to show you some videos and links that have some interest to understand better this civilisation. As  you know it is not easy to find good documents and some of them are too long but you can start by watching them for a while and then if you like them to continue another day.

This is the link to the website of the British Museum. It has lots of games and specific information about this culture. Explore it because you will learn a lot.
Botón de texto
First of all and linking our last unit with the new one there is a video in which you can compare the Persian and Greek civilisation. It is a different point of view as his author says:

In this video John Green,  the author,  compares and contrasts Greek civilization and the Persian Empire. "Of course we're glad that Greek civilization spawned modern western civilization, right? Maybe not. From Socrates and Plato to Darius and Xerxes, John explains two of the great powers of the ancient world.
This video is the first of a series of 5 (not even 10 minutes each). This is an interesting and clear introduction to  the Greek Civilisation. As their authors say:

"The Greeks built an empire that laid the foundations for modern science, politics, warfare and philosophy, and produced some of the most breathtaking art and architecture the world has ever seen. This documentary, narrated by Liam Neeson, recounts the rise, glory, demise and legacy of the empire that marked the dawn of Western civilization. Using the latest advances in computer technology, the story of this astonishing civilization is told through the lives of the heroes of ancient Greece. It combines dramatic storytelling, stunning imagery, groundbreaking research and distinguished scholarship to render classical Greece gloriously alive".
This is another video of John Green  in which you are going to enjoy the last period of the Greek Civilisation. Alexander the Great is analysed from another point view, making connections with other historical moments...
And now an introductory video to the Greek Civilisation, but in this case in Spanish. I think that it wil clarify you some of the questions you could have after watching the previous ones:
Another about Houses and poleis in ancient Greece. This is also in Spanish
DEMOCRACY IN ATHENS
In this video the Athenian Democracy is showed since its beginnings
THE GRECO-PERSIAN WARS also called the Median Wars...

As you know you don´t have this information in your book, nevertheless I consider it so important that I have introduced it in my explanations in class and I also want you to have some references here.

So, this is an interesting video that explains the war through one of its generals, Thucydides. I hope you like it:
After the Persian Wars Athens became the most powerful polis. The Delian League was created  to prevent attacks from the Persians. This military alliance between poleis was led by Athens. It was the Golden Age of Athens...

This video shows how this League developed and it also talks about Pericles. Discover who was him...
The next video talks about Alexander the Great. I think he doesn´t need presentations... but it also talks about Hellenism, something that we have mentioned several times in class. Learn more about...

GREEK ART POWER POINT

Here you have the power point about Greek Art  tha we have have been studying in class. I´d like you to watch it carefully taking notes and copying and completing your notes from class.

As the original power point is really large, I have divided it into two parts. The first is referred to architecture and the second one to sculpture.
